Brief: An interpretation of Norman Mailer’s The Fight

Description: The Fight is Mailer’s account of the Ali/Foreman fight that took place in 1974 and is better known as the “Rumble in the Jungle.” The piece was written from an introspective point of view—one that has Mailer examining not only his mental and emotional states, but those of the fighters. One line in particular stood out while reading:

“Fighters live in a dimension of boredom that others cannot begin to contemplate.”

That line drove the concept. I wanted know what that dimension looked like.
